About the Harmonic Minor scale

Harmonic minor is natural minor with the 7th raised a half step. The name comes from harmony: the raised 7th turns the minor v chord into a major V, which resolves to the root chord as strongly as in a major key.

What makes it sound the way it does

The gap between the ♭6 and the raised 7th is three half steps. That wide step is what gives the scale its distinctive, exotic leap.
