Enter the World of a Psytrance Legend

With decades of experience shaping the sound of psytrance, Talamasca brings his creative process directly into the studio. In this masterclass, he’ll take you through the ideas, techniques and decisions behind building a melodic psytrance track, while sharing the approach he has developed throughout his career.

Rather than simply following a track from beginning to end, you’ll explore a different way of thinking about production: defining the destination first, then building the musical journey that leads the listener there.

What You'll Learn

1. Starting a Track | The Foundation

We’ll begin by creating the basic foundation of the track, building the kick and bass, adding rhythmic and percussive elements, and introducing effects and movement. The focus is on establishing enough of a foundation to start developing the track while introducing the central idea of defining the destination before building the journey.

2. Building the Story of a Track

A great track is more than a collection of loops. We’ll explore how to think about music as a story, deciding where to take the listener, when to introduce or remove elements, and how to create tension, release and evolution throughout the arrangement. We’ll also look at how to keep ideas developing rather than simply repeating the same loop for several minutes.

3. Musical Theory for Trance & Psytrance

We’ll explore three of the most useful scales for trance and psytrance: Natural Minor, Harmonic Minor and Melodic Minor. You’ll learn how they are constructed, how their different characteristics affect the mood of a track, and how to use them practically when creating melodies, atmospheres and other musical elements.

4. Delay & Reverb | Creating Space

Delay and reverb are essential tools for creating depth, movement and atmosphere in electronic music. We’ll explore how to use delay for rhythmic movement, echoes and repetition, as well as how to use reverb to position sounds within a virtual space. We’ll also look at how to keep these effects controlled so the mix remains clear and powerful.

5. Finding the Main Melody

Once the musical direction is established, we’ll develop the track’s main melodic idea. We’ll explore how to find a strong motif, create variations and complementary sequences, and use repetition in a way that keeps the listener engaged. The main melody will become an important reference point for the development of the rest of the track.

6. Building the Beginning | Creating the Journey

Once the destination has been established, we’ll return to the beginning and build the journey toward it. We’ll develop the intro and earlier sections, introduce elements progressively, create transitions and anticipation, and develop variations of the main musical ideas. The goal is to make the final section feel like the natural destination of everything that came before it.

7. Arrangement as a Story

We’ll bring the different elements together and look at the complete structure of the track. From introduction and development through tension, evolution, climax and resolution, we’ll explore how each section can serve a purpose and how to guide the listener through the entire musical journey.

8. AI & Music

If time permits, we’ll finish by exploring the growing role of artificial intelligence in music production. Talamasca will discuss some of the creative possibilities and limitations of AI and demonstrate live how an AI-generated vocal can be created and integrated into a modern music production workflow.
