About the Major scale

The major scale is the reference most other scales are measured against. In C it is the white keys from C to C. Heinrich Glarean included Ionian in his expanded system of church modes in his 1547 treatise Dodecachordon.

What makes it sound the way it does

The 3rd, 6th and 7th are all major. The 7th sits a half step below the root, which pulls strongly back home.
