About the Diminished (Whole–Half) scale

An eight-note scale alternating whole and half steps, also called the octatonic scale. Olivier Messiaen listed it as his second mode of limited transposition, and only three different versions exist.

What makes it sound the way it does

The pattern repeats every minor 3rd, and the root chord is a diminished 7th.
