About the Lydian Dominant scale

The fourth mode of melodic minor. It is also called the acoustic or overtone scale, because its notes are close to the first notes of the natural harmonic series.

What makes it sound the way it does

It combines Lydian's ♯4 with Mixolydian's ♭7. The root chord is a dominant 7th with a ♯11 on top.
