About the Double Harmonic scale

Called Byzantine in many Western scale books. It has the same notes as Bhairav, one of the parent scales (thaats) of North Indian classical music, and is close to the Arabic maqam Hijaz Kar.

What makes it sound the way it does

It has two gaps of three half steps, from the ♭2 to the 3rd and from the ♭6 to the 7th, so its lower and upper halves are built the same way.
