About the Harmonic Major scale

Harmonic major is the major scale with a flattened 6th. It mirrors harmonic minor: one changes a single note of natural minor, the other a single note of major.

What makes it sound the way it does

The ♭6 turns the IV chord minor and creates the same three-half-step gap as harmonic minor, between the ♭6 and the 7th.
