About the Hirajoshi scale

A Japanese pentatonic scale associated with koto tuning. Sources give slightly different versions; this is the one most common in Western references.

What makes it sound the way it does

It has two half steps, from the 2nd to the ♭3 and from the 5th to the ♭6, separated by wide gaps.
