About the Locrian scale

Locrian is the seventh mode of the major scale: B to B on the white keys. It is the only mode of the major scale whose root chord is diminished, so older theorists treated it as theoretical and it was rarely used as a home key.

What makes it sound the way it does

It has both a ♭2 and a ♭5. The ♭5 makes the root chord diminished, giving the scale an unstable, unresolved quality.
