About the Enigmatic scale

The "scala enigmatica" was published as a puzzle in an Italian music journal in the late 19th century. Giuseppe Verdi harmonised it in his Ave Maria, later part of his Quattro pezzi sacri.

What makes it sound the way it does

After the ♭2 it climbs in whole steps from the 3rd to the ♯6, then a half step to the 7th and another back to the root.
