10 Serum 2 Secrets

Serum 2 rewards the curious. The more time you spend with it, the more it reveals —and a lot of what it reveals isn't documented anywhere obvious. Some of the most powerful techniques are buried behind a right-click, hidden in a dropdown nobody mentions, or require a specific combination of settings that aren't exactly spelled out in the manual.

 

This list isn't about covering the basics. It's about the stuff that actually changes how you work: modulation sources that only appear in the matrix, phase behaviors that most users never discover, turning the LFOs into an insanely poweful arpeggiator. Ten things, all of them genuinely useful, none of them obvious on first look.

1. LFO Arpeggiator — Still Worth Knowing (Even Though Serum 2 Has a Real One)

Serum 2 now ships with a proper built-in arpeggiator, so this technique is no longer a workaround out of necessity. But it's still extremely useful because the LFO arp gives you something the dedicated arpeggiator can't: independent pitch sequences per oscillator. With the LFO method, OSC A can be running one melody, OSC B another, all inside the same patch.

 

Here's how to set it up:

Step 1: Drag an LFO onto the Coarse Pitch of the oscillator you want to sequence. In Serum 2, the default modulation depth when you do this is already 24 semitones (no manual typing required like in Serum 1). That said, if you want a different range, double-click the mod matrix slider and type your value in semitones (e.g. 12st).
 

Step 2: In the LFO, set the Rate to Bar and the vertical grid to 24 (to match your 24-semitone range). Set the horizontal grid to 16 for standard 16th-note divisions. For a 12-semitone range, set the vertical grid to 12 and make sure your modulation is set to Unipolar (otherwise you'll only get ±6 semitones in each direction)
 

Step 3: Hold Shift + Option/Alt while drawing in the LFO to snap both horizontally and vertically to the grid. This is what locks your notes to the correct semitone positions. To add rhythm, assign a second LFO to the volume of the oscillator and draw a gate pattern. Keep your ENV 1 decay fully open and let the LFO handle the note shapes.

2. Key Commands for LFO Shapes

These aren't particularly secret shortcuts, but they're absolutely essential if you want to use Serum like a freakin' ninja:

• Hold Shift + drag: Draw steps that snap to the grid (step sequencer mode).

 

• Hold Option/Alt + Shift: Snap to both the horizontal AND vertical grid — the one you want for arpeggiated patterns.

 

• Hold Option/Alt (moving a point): Snaps the point to the grid.

 

• Hold Option/Alt (moving a curve handle): Moves all curve handles at once.

💡PRO TIP - Copying an LFO to Another: Hold Alt/Option, then click and drag any LFO tab onto another LFO tab to copy it. The target LFO will be overwritten with the shape and settings of the source. This is handy when building LFO-arp patches and you want to use the same pitch shape across multiple oscillators with slight variations.

3. Hidden Modulation Sources

Most modulation sources can be dragged and dropped directly onto a parameter, but more options are revealed when you right-click a parameter and go to Mod Source. In Serum 2, there are also some new sources worth knowing about

Note-On Alt 1 & 2: Flips between 0 and 1 on every note-on. Alt 2 is always the inverse of Alt 1. Use it to alternate between two states per note — a different warp mode, a panning flip, anything binary. Great for call-and-response type patterns where every other note behaves differently.
 

Note-On Rand 1 & 2: Two separate random numbers generated fresh at each note-on. Use one to randomize wavetable position, the other to randomize filter cutoff — each operates independently so they don't produce the same value as each other.
 

Note-On Rand (Discrete): Similar, but each destination assigned to this source gets its own unique random value per note. One source, multiple independent random outputs. Props to Virtual Riot for this one. Check out his video on Youtube.
 

Active Voices: A 0–1 value derived from how many voices are currently playing versus your max polyphony setting. As chords build up, this value rises — use it to open a filter, widen stereo, or increase reverb as the texture thickens.
 

Voice Index: Updates at note-on with the index position of that voice in the Voice panel. Combine this with the Global tab's Voice Control settings to create patterns that evolve with each successive note in a chord.
 

Oscillators & Noise Generators as Modulators: You can route audio-rate signals (Oscillators A, B, C, Sub, or the Noise Generator) as modulation sources to drive filter cutoffs or pitch. Right-click your target parameter, choose a Mod Source, and select the desired oscillator shape. This creates metallic FM-style movement, complex organic textures, and dirty-style basslines.
 

Note On Alt: Available in the Mod Matrix list, this source provides two alternating values per note press. It is excellent for adding subtle variations (like alternating filter resonance or slight pan shifts) with each subsequent key hit.
 

Auxiliary (Aux) Modulation: Add a second layer of control in the Modulation Matrix by setting an "Aux Source". For example, you can route an LFO to modulate filter cutoff, but set Macro 8 or LFO 3 as your Aux Source. This allows you to scale the intensity of your main modulation organically—from a subtle shimmer to extreme chaos—using an external knob or second envelope. 

💡PRO TIP - Use LIVE audio input as modulation source: If you want to use Serum’s internal modulators (like its LFOs or envelopes) to modulate real-time external audio, use the Serum FX plugin instead of the synthesizer.

1. Route Audio: Insert Serum FX onto an audio track/channel in your DAW.
 

2. Setup Modulators: Choose noise as a modulation source on a parameter parameter. The Noise Oscillators default setting in Serum FX is set to "Audio In"
 

3. NOTE LATCH: Engage the NOTE LATCH button in the lower-right voicing section to trigger and hold the modulation without needing to route MIDI notes.

4. Looping LFOs in Envelope Mode

Hold Shift + Cmd + Click (Mac) or Shift + Ctrl + Click (PC) on an LFO in Envelope mode to create a loop point — the LFO will play through once and then repeat from that point forward.


You can also right-click a point and choose "Set Loopback Point Here" from the menu. A grey L will appear on the node. This lets the beginning of the envelope be different from the looped section — great for patches where you want a distinct attack followed by a sustained repeating motion.

5. Phase Memory — The Hidden OSC Menu

There's a small chevron to the right of the phase area, next to the RAND control. Click it and you get the Phase Memory options:

All Voices: The default. Every new note uses whatever PHASE and RAND values you've dialed in.
 

Contiguous: Each new note continues from wherever the previous note's phase left off rather than resetting. Creates a more organic, connected feel — most noticeable on slow-moving wavetables or patches with low RAND.
 

Per Voice: Every new note starts from the same locked phase position. If you switch to this while a note is already playing, Serum captures the phase of the most recently sounded note and locks it in. Great for polyphonic patches where you want a consistent transient on every hit.

Neither of these menus is labelled anywhere on the main interface. Easy to use Serum 2 for months and never find either of them.

6. Modulated LFO Shapes

This is a Serum 2 feature that most users walk straight past. You can assign a modulation source to individual points or curves within an LFO graph, causing the shape itself to move in real time.


To do it: right-click any point in an LFO and choose Modulate X or Modulate Y. Select an LFO bus from the submenu and assign a modulation source to it. Alternatively, drag a mod source directly onto a point — an X or Y drop target will appear. The LFO graph shows a shaded bar on modulated points indicating the range of movement.


The most immediate application is modulating the Y position of points in a gate or volume LFO — use an envelope to gradually open up a rhythmic pattern so notes get longer or louder as the sound evolves. Or introduce subtle drift into specific points of any LFO shape over time, adding life to something that would otherwise sit static.

7. Tempo-Synced Envelopes

Most people set envelope times by ear, dragging until it feels right. But you can sync any envelope stage directly to your project BPM — just switch the envelope to BPM mode using the button at the bottom right of the envelope section.


Once in BPM mode, double-click any envelope stage and type a beat division directly — 1/8, 1/4, 1/16 — and Serum calculates the exact value for you. Clean, grid-locked envelope shapes without any math or guesswork.

8. Use LFO Shapes as Oscillators (and Vice Versa)

Hold Option/Alt and drag an LFO tab onto the wavetable display of OSC A, B, or C to replace the current wavetable with the LFO shape. This is a fast way to create custom single-frame wavetables from anything you've drawn in the LFO editor.


The reverse also works: from the LFO shape menu, choose Wavetable A to LFO (or B/C) to copy the currently selected wavetable frame into an LFO. Useful when you want an LFO that follows the harmonic shape of your oscillator.

9. Hidden FX Tips — Plus New Ones for Serum 2

The classics still work:

1. Set the Compressor's Ratio knob all the way right to "Limit" — this switches to a true peak limiter circuit, not just a compressor at high ratio.
 

2. Set the rate of the Phaser, Flanger, or Chorus to 0 — this puts the effect into full manual mode. The built-in LFO is bypassed and you can now modulate the parameters yourself for precise, programmed movement.
 

3. Every FX module in Serum 2 now has a dedicated Level slider — no more clicking Mix to toggle it into gain mode. Dial in your effect wet/dry and then trim the output level independently. Small thing, but it cleans up a workflow that used to require a workaround.

And a few new ones specific to Serum 2:

1. Use the FX Splitters creatively. The Splitter L/H, L/M/H, and M/S modules let you build separate effect chains per frequency band or stereo field component. A simple trick: put reverb only on the Side signal, leaving the Mid dry. Instant width without washing out the center.
 

2. Stack the same effect multiple times. Serum 2 now allows multiple instances of the same FX module in a rack. Two distortions in series with different modes — or two Delays with different times feeding into each other are now all possible within one patch.
 

3. The Convolve module (new in Serum 2) is a convolution reverb that accepts impulse responses.

10. Text To Speech Wavetable Generation

Using the Formula Parser, type any words you want in quotations and it will generate that into a “Text To Speech” type wavetable.

Conclusion

Every time I think I know Serum 2 inside out, I find something that changes how I work. That's not an accident (it's just how deep this instrument goes.)
